Produced as part of Therapy Focus' 9th annual Help a Child Grow Art Competition, I Am Special/Jarrah’s Jigsaw is an educational children's flipbook combining two age-appropriate stories, I Am Special for lower primary students, and Jarrah’s Jigsaw for upper primary students. Featuring the artwork of 55 West Australian primary school students, the 2011 storybook imparts key messages and values at an age when attitudes are shaped for life, encouraging children to focus on what peers with disabilities can do, not a perceived lack of ability or skills.
I Am Special is a rhyming story about Jarrah and his friends who have physical and/or intellectual disabilities. Go on a journey with Jarrah as he and his friends discover their talents and realise they are as special as can be. Read aloud the story and join in to create your own version at the end of the story.
Jarrah’s Jigsaw is about a boy called Jarrah who is quite small and has trouble reaching things. Go on a journey with Jarrah and his friends to discover their special talents, whether it be cricket, connect 4, musical instruments or being great at telling jokes! Jarrah’s friends are unique and different, just like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, and when they come together they form something great.
An accompanying accessible DVD provides e-book and digital talking book versions of the two stories in English and eight other languages, including Cantonese, Mandarin, German, Arabic, Malay, Vietnamese, Spanish, and French. Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) formatting and downloads have also been provided on the DVD to further enhance accessibility.
