Many of the heroes who thrilled us in the 1960s (see Volume 3 of this series) continued to ply their trade into the 1970s. Johnny Famechon, his skill undiminished, lead the way as Monarch of the World's Feathers, while Lionel Rose with ever-increasing weight, grew into a Junior-Lightweight.

The new world of boxing provided its new heroes and idols such as Tony Mundine, Charkey Ramon and Rocky Mattioli, to mention a few. Boxing was strong with Fammo and Mattioli holding world crowns at one time, while 14 others went on to claim Commonwealth titles in the 1970s covering eight divisions from Fly to Light-heavyweight, a fact that was unprecedented in our boxing history.
