Hey Nurse!/Ellis, Elizabe/Paper/0731676963/S001-B
Elizabeth I. Ellis
Elizabeth Ina Ellis, popularly known as Betty, commenced her nursing career in 1937 and was married at the end of 1939 when her fiancé was to depart for active service with the 2nd A.I.F. in the Middle East. She completed her training in May 1943 and continued nursing while her husband was a prisoner of war in the German Concentration Camp, Stalag VIIIB.
In 1986 Betty was compelled to withdraw from community activities to care for her invalid sister. It was during that time she was motivated to write about her nursing experiences which culminated in this historical record of what nursing life was like for a trainee 50 years ago.
Hey Nurse! is a factual account of the life of a trainee nurse, highlighting the hassles, the tragic and traumatic events and hilarious anecdotes occurring prior to and during the Second World War, in the era before the advent of antibiotics, ward domestics and wardsmen, before the introduction to country hospitals of suction beds, rubber mattresses and hydraulic hoists, before the invention of the electrical E.C.G. and monitoring machines and before life-support systems and other modern electrical equipment in the medical and surgical field.
