Into the Wadi/Drouart, Miche/Paper/1920731555/S049-D1
Fremantle Arts Centre Press
Into the Wadi is the story of Michèle, a young Australian woman who meets and then marries a fellow scholarship student at an American university. He is Jordanian, and Michèle returns with him to his country to live with his family.
Michèle Drouart's memoir is a sensitive, compelling exploration of cultural similarity and difference, written against the versions of Arab and Muslim culture to be found in such popularist texts as Not Without My Daughter, Princess and sold.
It is also a beautifully written and moving book about family, exile and belonging, about memory, and the complexities of human relationships.
