Dear Jack/Sauer, Tammi/Paper/1876603144/S015-E
Dear Jack is a tender and compelling story that takes the reader on a poignant and at times bumpy journey towards a memorable, uplifting and life-affirming conclusion.
Dear Jack is an account of the difficulties a young teenage girl and her family face in coming to terms with the mother's newly diagnosed breast cancer. The situation is made more difficult as the mother has fallen pregnant and for the sake of the unborn baby refuses chemotherapy. This seemingly unreasonable stance is regarded by her thirteen-year-old daughter, Laney, as unfair, irrational and selfish. As the months pass, Laney develops a growing resentment of her mother's decision and of her unborn baby brother.
The mother, Susan, in an attempt to get closer to Laney involves her in a range of activities they can do together. Though Laney is not always enthusiastic she goes along with them to keep her mother happy. Both mother and daughter develop a closer, though still fragile, relationship.
At the same time, Laney embarks on a plan to capture the heart of Andy Carter. Her good friend, Lydia, is behind the scheme and encourages Laney to send away to a magazine for The Boyfriend Kit. Laney is acutely self-conscious and embarrassed at the prospect of having to follow the steps laid out in the kit but her keen sense of humour together with a good measure of determination see her finally reach her goal.
Of course, all this takes place against the background of her mother's illness and serves as another set of complications in the life of Laney Curtis.
The closing scenes are unforgettable, reassuring and truly uplifting.
