The day Ben found an alien helmet down near the back fence, he though it would be fun to play with.

It wasn't long before he discovered it was magic.

This is the first of a series of stories concerning Ben and his magic helmet. Each episode or book is slightly similar while tackling a different topic.

While the series is specifically for children with Asperger's Syndrome, it is equally relevant to those with ADD and learning difficulties in general. Children with Asperger's learn by repetition so the repeated phrases and observations over each book in the series will help them to appreciate something they are already familiar with. The magic helmet fills in the gap between what they understand and what the teacher expects of Ben. It supplies a logical manner of understanding situations where these children typically become confused. It is chiefly in comprehending the cause-and-effect logic in human behaviour, especially where facial expressions are involved, that Asperger's children differ from others.

In this first episode Ben misunderstands the teacher's facial expression. Most children by this age know what anger looks like on adults' faces; equally, they are aware from facial expressions when they are being reprimanded. This is not necessarily something that a child with Asperger's Syndrome is likely to be able to translate from knowledge of his parents' anger and the expressions on their faces. Unless the teacher copied exactly the expressions his parents used, Ben isn't likely to recognise the teacher's personalised form of it. Her expression looks entirely peculiar to Ben, and while he is being personally reprimanded, he makes the fatal error of mocking the teacher for pulling such a ridiculous looking face.
