In addition to a full revision the second edition contains two new chapters by Ross Todd and Daniel Callison that relate knowledge management to managing information collections. A third new chapter by Donna Shannon discusses some of the dilemmas that affect collection management pracitce in a digital age. The broad scope of the work reflects the increased need to provide broader services and better access to information on a whole school basis, despite lower levels of funding. This decrease in funding has not been accompanied by a decrease in demand. In fact, users are becoming more sophisticated in their thinking about information and the demand on collections is increasing. Without effective collection management strategies, it will prove much harder to provide the range of services and resources that have become basic elements of users' epectations. The role of collection manager has become more complex reflecting a myriad array of professional tasks and activities. It is clearly evident that the collection manager needs to be able to balance needs and options. It is with this in mind that this book is written.
